On November 26, 1960, the Broadbeach State School was officially opened by the Hon. Jack Pizzey, M.L.A., the then Minister for Education. There were 70 students (37 boys and 33 girls) when the school doors opened.

The foundation Principal was Mr Nev Stanley, who had a staff of six teachers. By December of 1960, enrolment had grown to 115. Mr Stanley remained Principal until 1967.

In those early years, difficulties encountered by students included traffic hazards and rolling sand dunes. The sand blew into the children's eyes clothing and into their lunches.

The school grew rapidly to reach a peak of 1181 students in 1977, but as a result of changing demographics and the opening of new schools, Broadbeach State School currently has 380 students and 16 teachers. More than 8400 pupils have passed through the school since it was opened.
